Case Study: How I Rushed 2 Free Flights to Asia and Used 44,500 Hyatt Points Across Mainland Japan

A 16-day Taiwan & Japan trip: two rushed sign-up bonuses for transpacific award flights, 44,500 Hyatt points at ~1.72¢ each, and a full per-person cost breakdown.

After getting engaged (Paris & Rome case study), our next big milestone was a 16-day trip in May 2026 across Taipei (Taiwan), Okinawa (Naha and Yomitan), Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo.

Planning a multi-city Asia itinerary for two people on a college/early-career budget is daunting, so we broke the problem into two parts: transpacific flights and mainland Japan hotels.

Step 1: Rushing two sign-up bonuses for two free transpacific flights

Long-haul flights from the US to Taipei and back from Tokyo Haneda (HND) would have cost $1,100+ per person in cash.

To wipe that out fast, I leaned into airline co-branded cards and transferable points across my expanding 11-card portfolio (which grew to include the Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red (now a Citi AAdvantage card), Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select, Citi Strata Premier, Alaska Airlines Visa Signature, and Amex Delta Gold — plus coordinating in “Player 2” mode with my partner):

  • Fast-track bonus #1: the Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red was the ultimate “rush” card because it required no minimum spend tracker — just a single purchase of any amount and paying the $99 annual fee to trigger 70,000+ AA miles on the very first statement close. Under a 2024 agreement, Citi became American Airlines’ exclusive AAdvantage card issuer; in April 2026 Barclays Aviator Red accounts were converted to the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select.
  • Fast-track bonus #2: pairing that with a second sign-up bonus (Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select / transferable points via Aeroplan & partner awards) allowed us to book our long-haul flights across the Pacific on points:
    • Outbound (US → Taipei): booked for 42,500 miles + just $86.45 in taxes/fees.
    • Return (Tokyo Haneda → US): booked on points for just $97.66 in taxes/fees.

When we tallied up our spreadsheet after the trip, our points saved us $1,875.89 on flights alone. Even after adding cash intra-Asia flights from Taipei to Okinawa and Okinawa to Osaka (on Peach Aviation), our total out-of-pocket flight cost for the entire 16-day trip was just $378.10 per person.

Step 2: Covering mainland Japan & Taiwan hotels with 44,500 Hyatt points

Japan hotel rooms can get expensive quickly during peak spring travel in Osaka and Kyoto. However, I had saved up 44,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points specifically to transfer 1:1 to World of Hyatt:

CityHotelPoints usedCash equivalent¢ per point
Taipei (May 12–13)Hyatt Regency Taoyuan Intl Airport6,500 pts$1181.82¢
Osaka (May 18–20, 2 nights)Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka19,000 pts (9.5k/nt)$278 ($139/nt)1.46¢
Kyoto (May 20–22, 2 nights)Hyatt Place Kyoto19,000 pts (9.5k/nt)$370 ($185/nt)1.95¢
Total5 nights covered44,500 pts$766 saved1.72¢ avg

Cents per point is computed straight from the table — cash equivalent ÷ points used — and rounded to two decimals. Click any column header to sort.

¢ per point = cash equivalent ÷ points used × 100

Taipei $118 ÷ 6,500 pts × 100 = 1.82¢
Osaka $278 ÷ 19,000 pts × 100 = 1.46¢
Kyoto $370 ÷ 19,000 pts × 100 = 1.95¢
Total $766 ÷ 44,500 pts × 100 = 1.72¢

Flights aren’t given a cents-per-point figure: the cash fares were only quoted as ranges ($1,100+ per person), so there’s no exact number to divide.

Step 3: Paying cash where points didn’t make sense

A big rule of smart churning is never forcing a bad point redemption.

  • Okinawa (Naha and Yomitan): local hotels and resorts cost around $78–$96 per night per person, so we paid cash.
  • Tokyo (5 nights, May 22–27): Hyatt properties require 20,000–30,000+ points per night. Instead of draining our point balances, we booked a double room at the APA Hotel & Resort Nishishinjuku for $106.23/night total (~$53/night per person).

The final 16-day Japan & Taiwan cost breakdown (per person)

Because our transpacific flights and 5 nights of hotels in Taipei, Osaka, and Kyoto were zeroed out by points, here is what each of us actually paid out of pocket for a 16-day trip of a lifetime:

CategoryCost per personNotes
All flights (US–Taipei, Taipei–Okinawa, Okinawa–Osaka, Tokyo–US)$378.10Saved $1,875.89 via churning
Paid hotel nights (Okinawa + 5 nights in Tokyo)$488.52Saved ~$766 via 44,500 Hyatt points
Ground transit~$2805-day Okinawa rental car, Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo, Suica card loads
16 days of food & dining~$348Convenience store runs, conveyor belt sushi, soufflé pancakes, buffets in Okinawa
Total core trip cost~$1,570Roughly $1,570–$1,813 all-in

That total excludes optional shopping — custom rings in Tokyo, a Japanese kitchen knife, Onitsuka Tiger shoes in Osaka, and Pokémon Center pickups.
