Advanced Churning: Managing 11+ Cards, Bank Mergers, and Two-Player (P2) Strategy
Guide 3 (cards 9–11+): portfolio management at scale, product changes after bank migrations, upgrade arbitrage, velocity rules, and Player 2 mode.
Guide 3 of 3 — velocity rules, downgrades, and Player 2 mode (cards 9–11+). Builds on Guide 2.
Portfolio management at scale
Holding 11 credit cards — 10 in my name with $55,000 in total credit limits, plus one business card (which doesn’t count toward personal limits) (opened from 2022 to 2026) — actually boosts your credit score by keeping total utilization under 2–3% when everything is paid in full every month.
The full portfolio as of Oct 2026 — filter by bank or status, sort by any column, and open a row for details:

Business cards generally don't report to personal credit, so they don't count toward personal limits/utilization or 5/24-style application counts — excluded from the $55,000 total.

Product changes and issuer switches
A real-world example: when my Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red was converted to a Citi AAdvantage card, it left me holding duplicate Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select cards (as of Oct 2026: a $9,000 limit on the migrated card and $13,900 across both AA cards), both with annual fees.
The fix is a product change — converting a duplicate annual-fee card into a no-fee earner like:
- Citi Custom Cash — 5% on your top category, up to $500/month.
- Citi MileUp.
A product change keeps the account (and its credit history and limit) open without a new application.
Upgrade arbitrage
Consider upgrading a Chase Sapphire Preferred to a Chase Sapphire Reserve via product change. That avoids a hard credit pull, and the timing can let you double-dip the automatic $300 travel credit.
Bank velocity rules cheat sheet
| Bank | Rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Chase | 5/24 | Auto-deny if you’ve opened 5+ personal cards (any bank) in 24 months |
| Citi | 8/65 | Space Citi applications 8 days apart; no more than 2 within 65 days |
| Bank of America | 2/3/4 | Max 2 new BofA cards in 2 months, 3 in 12 months, 4 in 24 months |
| Capital One | Inquiry-sensitive | Strict about recent hard inquiries and overall application velocity |
Issuer rules are unofficial and change. Check recent data points before applying.
Player 2 (P2) mode
Coordinate card openings with your spouse or partner so you can:
- Refer each other for referral bonuses.
- Open two of the exact same airline card simultaneously — two sign-up bonuses means two free round-trip tickets.
